Rhode
Island First Lego League Robotics Championship Tournament
The seventh annual RI
First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Championship Tournament will take place on
Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Roger Williams University. FLL is
an international robotics competition. Each year the RISF facilitates
the RI state championship tournament. In this event, 9-14 year olds are given
the opportunity to build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style
robotics event. The FLL Challenge engages students in an intense
2 - 3 month period of robotic design and programming as well as
scientific research. This work culminates in an exciting tournament
atmosphere where teams compete in a head to head Robotics Challenge,
present their robots and programs to a group of Technical Judges,
and present their Research Projects to a group of Presentation Judges.
Additionally they will be meeting with a panel of Teamwork judges
who will look at their style of teamwork and team approach to the
challenge.
Forty-six teams will compete
in the 2007 Challenge titled 'Power Puzzle'. How do our personal energy choices to heat our homes, fuel our cars, charge our cell phones, power our computers, or even download music to our iPods impact the environment, economy, and life around the globe? Which resources should we use and why? Explore how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow, and for future generations. Can FIRST LEGO League teams find the ultimate solution to this global Power Puzzle?
This year Roger Williams University in Bristol
is also hosting the Rhode Island Junior First
Lego League Expo. (JFLL) JFLL is a program geared towards 5 - 9 year
olds. They will be working on a project that will align with the
FLL Nano Quest theme. Like the older students in FLL, these teams
will look at the limitations of a public place they choose and then
come up with ideas to make the building more accessible. JFLL teams from RI and neighboring N.E. states are participating in the Expo. The JFLL Expo will be held from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm on January 12, 2008.
