Invitation Dear Teachers, Students, Parents, Family Members and Friends, We would like to invite you and your family to attend the "Robotic Zoological Park", the tenth annual spring conference of the Rhode Island School of the Future (RISF) and the Rhode Island Robotics Design Project (RIRDP). Robotic Park is now the largest K-8 robotic event in the country. Student created robotic presentations and demonstrations will be open to the public on Saturday, April 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Peace Dale Elementary School gymnasium, cafeteria and library. No registration is necessary to tour the park and it is free of charge. This conference is a celebration event for National Science and Technology Month. It will be a time for students, teachers, parents, community members, and administrators to appreciate and enjoy "robotics in the classroom." The main activities of the conference include student demonstrations in The Robotic Animal Design Challenge, The Robotic Interactive Challenge, The Chain Reaction Machine Event, The Robot Rubbish Round-up, and Lego Jewelry Design Activities and The 2002 Palindrome Plunge Competition. The "Robotic Zoological Park" is an imaginary theme park with student designed and built robotic creations. Students in all grades from around the state of Rhode Island will be exhibiting an array of interesting Robotics inventions that they have been working on in the 2001-2002 school-year. On Friday April 5, from 5-9 pm, student robots will be competing in preliminary rounds of a task-oriented challenge known this year as the 2002 Palinndrome Plunge. Final rounds will take place on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 9 am. Demonstration robots will fill the Robotic Park Zoo cages and will imitate behaviors exhibited by the real animals or creatures within the confines of student created environments and Interactive robots will delight you in surprising ways. Students have spent a great deal of time researching, designing, building and programming robots that will be sure to entertain you. Overall we expect over 150 robots in this 10th annual event. In addition, students in grades K-4 have been asked to display robotic constructions made from discarded materials in the Rubbish Robot Round-up. There will also be opportunities to take part in hands-on activities designed to engage visitors in the design process and finally our first ever Robotic Chain reaction event which will be triggered at 1:00 am. We hope you and your family will join us for the festivities. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see the minds of our youngsters at work and to learn new things ourselves. See you at Robotic Park!! For more information about Robotic Park visit the website at RISF.net and go to events. American Power Conversion (APC) is the proud sponsor of the 2002 Robotic Park event. Sincerely, Janice C. Kowalczyk DIRECTIONS TO PEACE DALE SCHOOL: Get onto Rt. 138 either
from Rt. 1 or Rt. 95. Rt. 138 is the road that brings you to URI. At
the light just east of URI go south on Rt. 108 (also called Kingstown
Rd.). Go about 2-3 miles until you pass the Pump House Restaurant on
the right. Shortly after the restaurant, Rt. 108 makes a sharp left
at Liberty Rental. Stay on Rt. 108 (it becomes Kersey Rd. at this point).
Peace Dale Elementary is on the left up on a hill about 200 feet after
Liberty Rental.
